How to prick out seedlings (and other February gardening)

27th February 201827th February 2018 Stephanie Hafferty 2 Comments

It feels strange to be writing about heat loving plants like aubergines as Britain is gripped by unseasonally cold weather. Kitchen gardening is about always thinking ahead, anticipating and planning for what is to come, so I have been happy thinking about warm summer days as I wrap myself up in layers of thermals and woollens!

Our book No Dig Organic Home and Garden has now been translated into Czech!
No dig gardening is fantastic for the soil - working in harmony with soil life to grow great veg!
For English copies, signed by both @charles_dowding and myself see my website shop (link in bio). I’ll dedicate them as you wish - they make lovely presents. .

#nodig #nodigorganichomeandgarden #gardenauthor #worldsoilday2019 This is how Santa arrives in Bruton! Abseiling down @atthechapel and on to his grotto to meet the cheering children.
It’s Christmas Evening in the small Somerset town where I live, when shops stay open late serving mulled wine, local mulled cider and nibbles, there’s street food and lots to buy, supporting local businesses
Great fun 🎄

#Bruton #brutonhighstreet #shoplocal Preparing Crown Prince squash for soup on Sunday. It’s so delicious and just look at the colour of the flesh! Warming homegrown veggie soups are wonderful on cold days.
I added carrots, onions, leeks, celeriac, garlic and Lemon Drop chillies. Yum!
Crown Prince is easy to grow, prolific and likes our climate in the UK. One to try next year, perhaps?

#crownprincesquash #seasonalsoup #growfood #growyourown #wintersoup #plantbased #plantbasedrecipes #nodig #allotment #allotmentuk Loving the gorgeous autumnal colours of the lunch I made yesterday, plant based seasonal salads and a warming spicy beetroot and spinach soup.
Everything made from scratch using homegrown seasonal veggies, fruit & herbs (as far as humanly possible in the UK!) Today’s soup is simmering and I’ve made more salads for todays lunch too.
This weekend I’m cooking for our #nodig two day gardening course. I don’t plan the dishes in advance - instead I get inspiration when I see what @charles_dowding has harvested from the garden.
Recipes like these in my book The Creative Kitchen - it makes a lovely gift and I have some double pack special offers on my website: see link in bio. .

#plantbased #vegan #veganfood #wholefood #growfoodnotlawns #plantbasedrecipes #plantbasedvegan #homegrownveggies #homegrownmeals #seasonalfood #madefromscratch #madefromscratchwithlove #nodiggarden #healthyfood What a beautiful day! I’ve finally got all of the plantings done (some a few weeks late but it’s been dreadful weather) and harvested these muddy beauties at the allotment - parsnip, celeriac, carrots, leeks and beetroot.
I’ve now covered the remaining beetroots and carrots with 2 layers of fleece and a layer of enviromesh - this is to protect the fleece from any wild wanderers on the plot.
Looks like a cold weekend so all tender plants are either in my house or in the polytunnel or greenhouse, under layers of fleece, bubble wrap or old felted woolly jumpers! .

I constructed this on an area of concrete in my back garden. Looking forward to seeing how things grow in there over the seasons.
And looking forward to seeing how much food it can produce. It is 2m x 1m - and waist height, what a treat.
It has the all season cover plus a plastic winter cover on.
I put it together by myself, which was a bit fiddly but I did it - feeling well chuffed. .
